What is the state of racism in sports and in the United States?
Also when you begin answering that question, take a look at this quote from Monessen High School basketball player Justice Rawlins:
"I just don't understand racism nowadays because from what I learned in school, it's from the past."

Keep in mind, we live in a society where all around, students here at we are in a "post racial society" because we have a black President. And when you add the fact that there are people who are ACTIVELY trying to take things like slavery out of textbooks, well....what do you think happens?

I would love to say that racism doesn't exist anymore, but the fact of the matter is that it's so deeply (and disturbingly) embedded into our society. Sometimes, I feel like races "fall in and out of favor" depending on the politics of the time, oscillating among African Americans, people of Arabic descent and now Latinos... I coached a soccer team of 5-6 year old kids this past fall, and one of the parent's pulled their kids from the team because many of the children and community coaches on the other teams were Latino (loudly passionate about the sport). Super frustrating, but how much can you change someone's mind?
Is it worth entertaining dialogue with people of these views?

I think trying to change any one person's mentality, especially when children are involved, is worth the conversation. As the world of sports grows, minds have to grow as well. Even if we don't reach the DIRECT person, say a parent, who knows if our message of equality was or wasn't heard by a child who needed it.

Sadly, racism is probably going to always be around. What's even more sad is that its in sports, a place where we should be able to forget such an ignorance exists! What's sad about the high school story is that adults were encouraging it and NOBODY did anything to stop it! If no one is doing anything about it, then why would they stop! Its really sad!

Take a look at Mr. Rawlins quote. Racism does still exists even though he may be ignorant to that fact but the bigger question doesn't have to do with his ignorance. It has to do with what the youth is being taught in the schools today.
